The Station

Alness

The Station is located on Alness High Street and offers the ‘Mega Sunday Breakfast’ between 9am and 12pm. The order was taken quickly and the breakfast was served within 10 minutes. During the wait a large pot of tea and a large cafetier was placed on the table but no sugar or milk was placed on the table. A small jug of milk and sugars on the table would have been nice – instead you have to venture to the table with the cereal on it. The toast (brown or white) was also served immediately, about 10 minutes before the actual breakfast, but no side plates were served to place the toast on. It would be better if the toast was served when the breakfast came out.

The ‘Mega Sunday Breakfast’ also includes cereal and chilled juice and these were displayed on a small table – but it wasn’t obvious that these were for the customer or just waiting to be put away. The Station also advertises that vegetarian substitutes are available. The cooked breakfast was amazing and it is cooked to order with your choice of poached, fried or scrambled eggs – and you get two eggs. The breakfast appeared to be grilled and there was nothing to criticise about it. Served on a large plate it contained two tasty sausages, a lovely black pudding, bacon, tattie scone, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans and 2 eggs. The breakfast was certainly filling but if you are not completely full you can order more items for free, although this was quite hard to do as the staff never once came over and asked if more food or drink was required. In fact the staff either hid in the back of the restaurant or elsewhere in the hotel, so extra coffee was never received.

This breakfast was really good and has scored 4 out of 5 stars. It missed out on the Ultimate Full Scottish Breakfast 5 star mark due to it missing haggis and a lorne sausage. On the hunt for the Ultimate Full Scottish Breakfast marks are awarded only for the quality of the cooked breakfast and not the service provided, otherwise the points would have been lower. It’s important to focus on the food and not the service as sometimes the staff has bad days – they’re only human after all and it might be better next time.

Overall this was an excellent breakfast which is both filling and good value for money. The inclusion of chilled juice, cereals and refills on the cooked breakfast makes this establishment a cut above the rest in the area and our highest scoring breakfast so far.

Recommendations for the Owner to achieve Full Scottish Breakfast Greatness:

UPDATE

After another visit to The Station in Alness, we had a slightly different experience. The first point to mention is that the breakfast now includes a hash brown! We love a bonus item. The second point to note is that we were given the choice of what and how many items were put on the plate. Now I’m not sure if you get refills anymore, like we were told the first time, or if you just order as much as you can greedily manage? The third and final point is that the service was excellent, much better than the first time. The cereals and juice were laid out nicely, milk for the tea was brought out, side plates for the toast were given and the waitress (different one from the last time) was extremely helpful and attentive.

Cafe Sixty Six

Alness

Café 66 is situated on Alness High Street and has a pleasant atmosphere with friendly staff. The Café wasn’t too busy when we arrived so we were served quickly and the food arrived within 10 minutes.

The breakfast includes a cup of tea or coffee. For an additional 65p you can replace this for an orange juice or upgrade the coffee to a cappuccino for example - this is an excellent idea. It was disappointing to find out that if you wanted the egg cooked any other way apart from fried, then you would have to pay an extra 40p! It was baffling as to why you should have to pay extra for a poached or scrambled egg – after all it’s the same ingredient with some salt and pepper added for taste – surely they're not charging for the salt and pepper?

The Full Breakfast, as it is advertised came with all the basic items required to be classed as a Full Scottish with the addition of some mushrooms. The breakfast appeared to be fried and it is debateable as to whether this is a downside to the breakfast, but that will be discussed later on. The sausages were of good quality and thoroughly enjoyable. The fried egg was cooked to perfection – with a nice runny yolk. The black pudding wasn’t the tastiest, it was quite dense and let the breakfast down just a wee bit. The bacon was nicely cooked and the rest of the vegetables and tattie scone were good.  A niggling picky point is that the butter was solid for the toast, which makes it hard to spread.

This breakfast started with 2 points as it had all of the basic items for the Full Scottish Breakfast plus mushrooms. The addition of mushrooms and the quality of sausages gave it an additional point but lost points for charging to have an egg cooked differently and the quality of the black pudding. The addition of haggis and lorne sausage would have put this breakfast in the Ultimate Scottish category.

It’s debateable whether or not marks should be deducted for frying a breakfast even though this is a common way of cooking it. In the modern ‘healthy Scotland’ we are trying to cut down on our fat consumption and grilling most items helps reduce this, plus the breakfast looks nicer without grease sitting on top of the items or on the plate. You can also see the remaining grease on the plate once all items have been eaten. However it was decided that everyone has their own opinion on this – so marks should not be deducted and the meal wasn’t overly greasy from what you would expect from a fry up.

This was a very nice breakfast which was good value for money and you won’t leave hungry. This breakfast scored 3 out of 5 and I would go back again.

Recommendations for the Owner to achieve Full Scottish Breakfast Greatness:
(In order of priority)

1. Don’t charge the customer for cooking the eggs differently.
2. Find a different black pudding supplier.
3. Addition of haggis.
4. Swap a links sausage for a lorne sausage.

Tomich Restaurant

Invergordon

We were one of the first few customers so our order was taken and delivered quickly. On busy periods you can wait 5 minutes to be served. The food was served within 10 minutes.

The food appeared to be grilled with a fried egg. The breakfast had only the basic ingredients for what we would consider to be a full Scottish; Sausage, bacon, egg, black pudding, tattie scone, beans, tomato and toast. The fried egg was nicely cooked with a runny yolk and not too greasy. The sausages were nothing special to write home about but they weren’t bad.  I wasn’t hungry after this breakfast but I didn’t feel stuffed and I feel that you should after a full Scottish. There was room on the plate to add some extra items like a lorne sausage and haggis. The bonus of this restaurant is that you get a full pot of tea with your breakfast, which you can fill 2 cups with – other restaurants have only provided one mug of tea, and you have usually drank this before your meal arrives.

This breakfast lost favour from the judges for not giving the customer the choice of how they would like their eggs cooked and the plate looked slightly empty.  There were no points added for extra items or the quality of produce.

This breakfast can only be described as average, which is disappointing considering the quality usually served in the Tomich Restaurant. An increase in the items supplied on the plate could make the breakfast a little more memorable and filling.

Recommendations for the Owner to achieve Full Scottish Breakfast Greatness:

(In order of priority)

1. Give the customer the choice of eggs.

2. Addition of haggis (this would fill the customer up).

3. Swap a links sausage for a lorne sausage.

4. Addition of mushrooms.

UPDATE

It is nice to see that the owners of Tomich Restaurant, Invergordon have taken note of one of our recommendations – or at least it’s nice to think it was our input that brought the change. They have now given the customer the choice of egg; poached, scrambled or fried. While we never eat the breakfast the second time we visited, it was written on the board. I wonder if there is now a lorne sausage and haggis included too?

The Storehouse

Foulis Ferry

This was the second attempt to eat breakfast here as we tried previously the week before, however as we arrived at 11:30am they were no longer serving breakfast. They were also unable to serve a main lunch course until 12pm, so we had to settle for small snacks such as soup, a baked potato or sandwiches – there was probably more items to choose from, but I think you get the gist, we couldn’t have ordered fish and chips or a steak pie. I can’t see a reason why a breakfast shouldn’t be served all day and the restaurant lost out on some more money here because of this food black hole hour.

This restaurant is usually busy and it was when we visited. Their service was relatively fast in the queue and the food order took 15 minutes to arrive, which wasn’t bad considering the volume of customers.

Now for the important part – the food! The food was of good quality produce and items appeared to be grilled with no grease. The breakfast included haggis, black pudding, 2 x sausages, 2 x bacon, a tomato halved and an egg cooked to your preference. The eggs were all cooked to perfection, with a nice runny yolk in the poached and fried egg (there were a few of us). The bacon was a little dry, but that is probably down to the grilling. Unfortunately the sausages were not the warmest and were cold half way through the meal, but they did taste good when they were warm. The haggis and black pudding were sizeable, moist and delicious.

In the hunt for the best Scottish Breakfast, the Storehouse breakfast loses points by not including beans or a tattie scone – these are a must for what we consider to be the basics of a full Scottish Breakfast. Other items that would have been nice to see would be some mushrooms and the replacement of 1 links sausage with a lorne sausage. They could consider replacing half a tomato for some mushrooms. The Storehouse also lost points for some cold sausages but gained some points for the quality of produce.

Overall this was a good breakfast that was filling, let down only by cold sausages and some missing ingredients, but a quality breakfast all the same. This breakfast doesn’t meet our criteria for a Full Scottish but then they haven’t advertised it as such.

Recommendations for the Owner to achieve Full Scottish Breakfast Greatness:
(In order of priority)

1. Add beans and a tattie Scone.
2. Swap a links sausage for a lorne sausage.
3. Swap half a tomato for some mushrooms.
4. Reduce the size of the haggis and black pudding slightly to accommodate the extra items added – it was filling after all.
