Cafe Sixty Six

Alness

Café 66 is situated on Alness High Street and has a pleasant atmosphere with friendly staff. The Café wasn’t too busy when we arrived so we were served quickly and the food arrived within 10 minutes.

The breakfast includes a cup of tea or coffee. For an additional 65p you can replace this for an orange juice or upgrade the coffee to a cappuccino for example - this is an excellent idea. It was disappointing to find out that if you wanted the egg cooked any other way apart from fried, then you would have to pay an extra 40p! It was baffling as to why you should have to pay extra for a poached or scrambled egg – after all it’s the same ingredient with some salt and pepper added for taste – surely they're not charging for the salt and pepper?

The Full Breakfast, as it is advertised came with all the basic items required to be classed as a Full Scottish with the addition of some mushrooms. The breakfast appeared to be fried and it is debateable as to whether this is a downside to the breakfast, but that will be discussed later on. The sausages were of good quality and thoroughly enjoyable. The fried egg was cooked to perfection – with a nice runny yolk. The black pudding wasn’t the tastiest, it was quite dense and let the breakfast down just a wee bit. The bacon was nicely cooked and the rest of the vegetables and tattie scone were good.  A niggling picky point is that the butter was solid for the toast, which makes it hard to spread.

This breakfast started with 2 points as it had all of the basic items for the Full Scottish Breakfast plus mushrooms. The addition of mushrooms and the quality of sausages gave it an additional point but lost points for charging to have an egg cooked differently and the quality of the black pudding. The addition of haggis and lorne sausage would have put this breakfast in the Ultimate Scottish category.

It’s debateable whether or not marks should be deducted for frying a breakfast even though this is a common way of cooking it. In the modern ‘healthy Scotland’ we are trying to cut down on our fat consumption and grilling most items helps reduce this, plus the breakfast looks nicer without grease sitting on top of the items or on the plate. You can also see the remaining grease on the plate once all items have been eaten. However it was decided that everyone has their own opinion on this – so marks should not be deducted and the meal wasn’t overly greasy from what you would expect from a fry up.

This was a very nice breakfast which was good value for money and you won’t leave hungry. This breakfast scored 3 out of 5 and I would go back again.

Recommendations for the Owner to achieve Full Scottish Breakfast Greatness:
(In order of priority)

1. Don’t charge the customer for cooking the eggs differently.
2. Find a different black pudding supplier.
3. Addition of haggis.
4. Swap a links sausage for a lorne sausage.
