Foulis
Ferry
This was the second
attempt to eat breakfast here as we tried previously the week before, however
as we arrived at 11:30am they were no longer serving breakfast. They were
also unable to serve a main lunch course until 12pm, so we had to settle for
small snacks such as soup, a baked potato or sandwiches – there was probably
more items to choose from, but I think you get the gist, we couldn’t have
ordered fish and chips or a steak pie. I can’t see a reason why a breakfast
shouldn’t be served all day and the restaurant lost out on some more money
here because of this food black hole hour.
This restaurant is
usually busy and it was when we visited. Their service was relatively fast in
the queue and the food order took 15 minutes to arrive, which wasn’t bad
considering the volume of customers.
Now for the important
part – the food! The food was of good quality produce and items appeared to
be grilled with no grease. The breakfast included haggis, black pudding, 2 x
sausages, 2 x bacon, a tomato halved and an egg cooked to your preference.
The eggs were all cooked to perfection, with a nice runny yolk in the poached
and fried egg (there were a few of us). The bacon was a little dry, but that
is probably down to the grilling. Unfortunately the sausages were not the
warmest and were cold half way through the meal, but they did taste good when
they were warm. The haggis and black pudding were sizeable, moist and
delicious.
In the hunt for the best
Scottish Breakfast, the Storehouse breakfast loses points by not including
beans or a tattie scone – these are a must for what we consider to be the basics
of a full Scottish Breakfast. Other items that would have been nice to see
would be some mushrooms and the replacement of 1 links sausage with a lorne
sausage. They could consider replacing half a tomato for some mushrooms. The
Storehouse also lost points for some cold sausages but gained some points for
the quality of produce.
Overall this was a good
breakfast that was filling, let down only by cold sausages and some missing
ingredients, but a quality breakfast all the same. This breakfast doesn’t meet
our criteria for a Full Scottish but then they haven’t advertised it as such.
Recommendations
for the Owner to achieve Full Scottish Breakfast Greatness:
(In
order of priority)
1. Add beans and a
tattie Scone.
2. Swap a links sausage
for a lorne sausage.
3. Swap half a tomato
for some mushrooms.
4. Reduce the size of
the haggis and black pudding slightly to accommodate the extra items added –
it was filling after all.
